Snead State Holds Induction into the National Society of Leadership and Success

Snead State Community College inducted 172 students into the National Society of Leadership and Success, a leadership program implemented at the College this fall.
An induction ceremony was held Thursday, Nov. 30, at the Bevill Center auditorium. Snead State President Dr. Robert Exley spoke to the students regarding leadership during the ceremony.

“Whatever you want to do in life, you can do. Sometimes you don’t know what you’re capable of, but your potential is limitless,” said Dr. Exley.

He shared with the students the guiding tenets for leadership and success. “All leadership development is personal development. We are the result of those to whom we grant influence in our lives. We have a moral obligation to serve others first, and this takes precedence over personal achievement. The encouragement of others is a critical skill that comes from a ‘right-heart attitude.’ We must have the courage to engage in ongoing and meaningful reflection on our beliefs, our actions and our emotions.”

During the induction ceremony, Dr. Exley received an honorary membership into the National Society for Leadership and Success.

To qualify for induction in the NSLS, students had to complete requirements such as attending a two-hour orientation meeting, attending a four-hour leadership training day, attending at least three speaker broadcasts, meeting regularly with peer groups throughout the semester, and submitting at least three essays detailing goals and their progress. Each student spent a minimum of 15 extracurricular hours working toward leadership development.

One of the inductees shared about her experience in working toward induction into the NSLS. Angela Barajas of Boaz said she never imagined the impact the experience would have on her until she became involved.

“I am shy and not comfortable with large groups, but as soon as we started (our work), it was a great experience. We were able to expand our friendship circle. It was a great experience to talk to people and get their opinions. It allowed me to get out of my comfort zone. I’m really excited to see where it will lead us after this,” she said.

NSLS is the nation’s largest leadership honor society. Students are selected by their college for membership based on either academic standing or leadership potential. Candidacy is a nationally recognized achievement of honorable distinction. With 588 chapters, the NSLS currently has more than 800,000 membership nationwide.
