Snead State Community College students traveled to Calhoun County for an enrichment experience focusing on their interests.
Students with the History@Snead and the Society of Drama and Finer Things student organizations began their tour with the Berman Museum and the Anniston Natural History Museum. They followed the history of the Chinese Dynasties through exhibits of original vases, statuary, and jade from various times in Chinese Dynasties. Other exhibits featured the gods of India, a set of Shogun warrior armor, the Old West and European history.
“Of interest were a Greek helmet of the Hellenistic era, a make-up set owned by a wife of Napoleon, the crown, orb, and scepter of a Moravian king and a tea service owned by Hitler,” said Instructor and History@Snead co-sponsor Dr. Grover Kitchens. “At the Anniston Museum of Natural History, the students were able to see recreations of the natural environments of animals in the while as well as two Egyptian mummies.”
After meeting their interest in history, the students then fueled their interest related to theatre. They toured the Oxford Performing Arts Center, including the dressing rooms, green room, stage and art gallery. The Center director gave them information about the programs offered at the venue as well as career opportunities related to theatre arts including advertising, accounting, talent procurement, and facilities upkeep.
Enrichment trips for students are goals for both the History@Snead and Society of Drama and Finer Things student organizations. The History@Snead’s mission is to provide students with external experiences that enhance the educational offerings within the social sciences, provide service to our campus through presentations, and increase leadership and public speaking skills within the Snead State student body. Sponsors for the History@Snead is Instructor Seth Busby as well as Dr. Kitchens. The purpose of the Society of Drama and Finer Things is to establish and foster an appreciation of the art form of theatre and fine arts. The sponsor for the society is Instructor Kyle Steffen.
