
The Art Program at Snead State Community College is designed to enhance the skills of student artists or develop the skills in beginners with an interest in art. With a student-centered approach, art students receive supportive instruction that allows them to connect their personal interests and future goals to their artistic skill. Students can explore their creative endeavors while focusing on work they care the most about.
Classes for Beginners
- ART 113: Drawing I – This class is ideal for students with no previous art experience. Instruction focuses on the basics, exploring personal interests and developing skills. Student create work they care about. Grading is based on effort, not skill, but as long as you try your best, you will be successful!
- ART 121: Two-Dimensional Composition – No previous art experience is required for this class, and grading is based on effort, not skill. An enjoyable class for beginning artists, Two-Dimensional Composition focuses on steps to put together a picture or composition. Students are given creative freedom to explore their personal interests and create work they care about.
- ART 127: Three-Dimensional Composition – Learn sculptural materials and design principles while exploring the fundamentals of three-dimensional art. You’ll creatively explore materials to construct three-dimensional artworks while creating meaningful work you care about. Demonstrate basic technical skills and discover your creative potential in three-dimensional art forms. Grading is based on effort, not skill!
- ART 203: Art History I – Curious about ancient art and its stories? This project-based course covers sculpture, painting, and architecture from ancient times through the Renaissance. You’ll explore your personal interests through Art Historical projects and presentations, examining themes, styles, and the development of the arts.
- ART 204: Art History II – Ready to explore art’s modern evolution? This project-based course covers sculpture, painting, and architecture from the Baroque period to the present. You’ll pursue your personal interests through hands-on projects that mirror professional Art Historical research and presentations, investigating themes, styles, and how history and culture have shaped the arts.

Classes for More Experienced Students
- ART 114: Drawing II – Ready to expand your drawing skills? This class builds on previous skills with more exploration, expression, and personal direction. You’ll advance your abilities in various media while experimenting with composition, technique, and personal expression. Communicate your thoughts and feelings through creative drawing and art fundamentals. Grading focuses on effort, self-challenge, exploration, and personal growth.
- ART 233: Painting I – No art experience? No problem! Learn fundamental painting processes and materials including painting fundamentals, color theory, and composition. You’ll explore various approaches to painting media while creating personally meaningful work. Demonstrate art fundamentals and discuss creative processes associated with painting. Grading is based on effort, not skill!
- ART 234: Painting II – Want to deepen your painting practice? This class builds on previous skills with more exploration, expression, and personal direction. You’ll develop knowledge of painting materials and procedures while tackling creative and technical challenges. Communicate your artistic ideas through composition and personal expression using painting fundamentals and creative processes. Grading focuses on effort, self-challenge, exploration, and personal growth.
- ART 291: Supervised Study in Studio Art I – Ready to develop your independent studio practice? This course is for students who have completed all other studio art courses and want to continue developing a personal studio practice with mentor guidance. You’ll choose your own topics and pursue what excites you most while earning credit for your independent work. Grading focuses on effort, self-challenge, exploration, and personal growth.
- ART 299: Art Portfolio – Ready to launch your next chapter? This course helps students moving on to advanced education or careers develop tools and materials for success. You’ll create a professional portfolio showcasing your potential to employers, clients, and schools while mastering professional presentation of your portfolio.
